Experience

As a language arts teacher with 7 years of experience, I have taught many grade levels (8-12) and abilities (from struggling readers to gifted and talented students). Currently, I teach in a suburban, district I area (second to highest). Previously, I taught in Jersey City and Newark. Being a reading teacher and language arts teacher is not without its challenges (Who likes writing? Who wants to be forced to read something that isn't interesting?! Who wants to be tested on all of these?!). However, by focusing on skills rather than content, students begin to ease into the enjoyment of savoring the unknown and uncharted. Reluctant readers and writers become more confident in their abilities and, as a result, embrace increasingly difficult texts. When "I don't know" is said, contemplation replaces the frustration. I have a history of success demonstrated on standardized tests. All of my students have passed HSPA and NJASK. While teaching 9th grade, 34% improved from proficient to advanced proficient. Last year, 24% of my 8th graders improved from proficient to advanced proficient. With PARCC, comes text complexity and rigor. Together we can create create a game plan to improve one or many skills until a student exhibits mastery. I have handouts, texts and benchmark assessments available. I'd be happy to customize lessons around your child's interests and learning style.
